At the Bivaj Workshop in Transylvania, master craftsmen Vajai Ferenc and Biro István (affectionately known as the "old boys") handcraft top-quality stringed instruments with unmatched precision and passion. We specialize in double basses, but also build cellos, viola da gambas, and violons, inspired by historical music traditions. Every instrument is individually designed, features our custom internal label, and comes with a certificate of authenticity.

All wood is sourced from the Carpathians and air-dried for years. The tops are made of high-grade resonance spruce, with two-piece curly maple backs, ribs, and necks. We use ebony for the fingerboard and tailpiece, and select maple for the bridge.

Each instrument is completely handmade using traditional methods. Our signature antique-style varnish combines Joha original spirit-based lacquer and natural resins, enhancing both look and sound. We also create custom mechanisms and artistic bass keys with innovative designs.

Whether you're a soloist or orchestral performer, a Bivaj instrument offers superior tone, craftsmanship, and timeless character, a true one-of-a-kind creation.
